Creating an Archive page for a Festival, Season, or Series

Once your event is over, you'll likely want to retain a visible history of all the events you presented as part of that festival, season, or event series. Your Elevent Events stop showing after all dates come to pass, but they don't disappear from your WordPress website. It's not very difficult to freeze your event grids and lists to turn them into time capsules, or create a more elaborate archive of your events and layer in Elevent Events in whatever you create.

We'll show you the basics here and you can take it from there. In this walkthrough, we'll take an Event Grid, post event, and turn it into an evergreen archive.

Here's a little video showing one way you can create an archive page.

Grouping Elevent Events into a Festival, Season, or Series

First, you'll need to make sure all of your Elevent Events are grouped into a single festival, season, or series. Learn how to do this here using the festival/season/series category.

Create a New Listing for Your Archived Festival, Season, or Series

The reason past events stop showing up in your live event browsing pages is, well, because we're telling them to. To make those past events reappear, we just need to create a new block that displays events and tell it not to care if they've already transpired.

You can do this in any of the various ways you display events in WordPress (Elementor post lists, PowerPack, etc.). We'll show you how using the default FacetWP listings that come with the plugin.

Visit Settings -> FacetWP from the WordPress admin menu. Choose the Listings tab in the purple submenu.

Hover over the cogwheel next to the event grid or list you want to use to display events in the archive and choose Duplicate.

Rename this new listing and rename the shortcode as well. Then press the Query tab.

Press the red minus symbol by the "Narrow results by" field that is only including Coming Soon and Now Showing events.

Pretty the Add query filter button, and set it so it includes only events in the festival/season/series you wish to archive.

Press Save Changes and Re-index. Press Copy Shortcode by your new listing--you'll need it in a minute.

Create an Archive Page That Uses Your New Archived Event Listing

The last step is to create or modify a page to show your archive of events.

Classic WordPress Templates

If you are using classic WordPress templates, you'll want to copy and create a new template for this specific archive. Copy one of the templates from the Elevent plugin's "templates" folder. On many sites, that is in this folder:

wp-content/plugins/Elevent-WordPress-Plug-in-main/templates

Copy the template you'd like to use in your own child theme folder and rename the file.

Edit the file. Rename it at the top.

Replace the shortcode for the event listings towards the bottom with your new listing.

Upload this modified file into your child theme folder.

Lastly, either update or create a page in WordPress. And assign your new template to this archive page.

Elementor Templates

In Elementor, open the page where you want to create your archive--simply edit the shortcode where the existing event listing resides and paste in your new archive listing shortcode.
